Avatar is an American startup developing agentic robotic systems to deploy in manufacturing settings. They are sourcing wheeled humanoid robots from China and interested in low cost but high quality alternatives to current players in the US-market.
The Sparrows performed market research on humanoid robotic companies in China, with a focus on the wheeled humanoid form factor.
We vetted 20+ robotics companies with expertise n humanoid robots, providing the client with a down-selected list of companies to purchase from.
We visited several of the companies on-site to establish relations with the managers, negotiating for discounts that reduced client’s BOM costs by up to 50%.

In the initial engagement phase, The Sparrows sourced vendors for custom hardware development of the electronic components of the client’s device. From initial engagements with 20+ OEM/ODM suppliers, we presented the client with a list of 3-5 top options to visit during their upcoming trip.
Client visit to Shenzhen
For the client’s in-person visit to Shenzhen, The Sparrows organized supplier visits, assisted with on-site translation and negotiations, and coordinated other trip visits including meals, transportations, and tours.
The clients also toured an electronics convention, additional factories of interest, and the Shenzhen Maker Faire. And of course, no trip to Shenzhen is complete without a tour of the Huaqiangbei Electronics Market!
Ongoing Project Management
Post-client visit, we continued managing relations with down-selected suppliers, providing R&D support, supply chain optimization, and pricing negotiations to streamline the client’s R&D and prototyping phase. Specific tasks included:
Regular and live-translated meetings between the client and supplier to finetune product specifications
Organizing shipment of samples to client overseas
Quotation negotiations to reduce NRE and BOM costs
Sourcing for alternative components for further BOM cost optimization
Manufacturing Contract Preparation
As the client prepares to move forward with a manufacturing partner, The Sparrows developed manufacturing contracts and NDA documents to protect the client’s IP in China.

Quality Control
Forages is a Canadian startup developing high-quality and sustainable kits for growing sprouts, delivering nutrient-rich vegetables straight to one’s countertop. After perfecting their design, they began mass manufacturing in China and reached out to The Sparrows for a comprehensive post-production quality control of their finished products.
Prior to the inspection, The Sparrows assisted the client in the development of QC standards according to AQI sampling guidelines, offering recommendations for possible checkpoints and areas of inspection.
Tasks included in the final inspection included:
Factory audit of vendors and sub-vendors
Diameter, height, durometer, hole gauge, pattern concentricity, and tab flatness measurements
Appearance checks for blemishes, stains, and discolorations
CMF certifications
Food-grade testing of artwork with 3rd party labs
Packaging and instruction manual quality checks
Post-inspection, The Sparrows developed a comprehensive inspection report, identifying improvements in process development and recommendations for future production runs.

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world, where the lack of supply chain infrastructure make many daily necessities – such as hygiene products – inaccessible to the local population. Working closely with Adix, the founder of LandMark Enterprise, the Sparrows sourced sanitary napkins at competitive prices to cater to the Sierra Leone market.
